Recap!

It has been a long time since my last post...probably more than a year! Many things have happened since, I'm now living in Australia and I'm part of a great project called "Magna Pizza"...an authentic Italian pizzeria in Perth! My fur family is finally with me and this makes my staying much easier, we're all enjoying our new life even if, sometimes, it is hard being away from our beloved ones. During this year I've met many new people and most of all are now good friends...I'm so grateful for having so my nice people around me...! My family spent a month over here and it is great that they've finally seen where I am living and what I'm doing. We visit few places together and did touristic things...Even a good friend of mine came to visit me from Italy...such a special moment having family and friends around when you live so far away from home! We are living in Fremantle, the bustling, dynamic port city known for its eclectic mix of arty and alternative types...I love it! Fremantle is very me and I feel at home here...

Sculpture by the sea 2014

Hi everyone, if you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend you to visit the annual art exhibition called "sculpture by the sea" that takes place in Cottesloe.
I am going there again on Thursday to take more photos but, in the meanwhile, enjoy these ones and let me know if you have visited the exhibition and what sculpture you liked more.

A day in Fremantle (photos)

My first Australia day in Australia!

Since I met Brad, even if we were not in Perth, we have tried to celebrate the Australia day wherever we were living... This year  has been my first "real" Australia day in Australia! For all my friends around the world I would like to explain what the 26st of January means for this country. 

January the 26st of 1788 Captain Athur Phillip took formal possession of the colony of New South Wales and raised the British flag for the first time in Sydney Cove. Therefore we can consider this day a sort of "Foundation Day" and since 1994 all states and territories celebrate Australia Day togheter on the actual day and they welcome new citizens or honour people who did great services. 

Celebrations started early in the morning with events on the local beaches. I actually went to Cottesloe one of the most popular and beautiful beach of Perth, there was a "thong challenge" to raise money for the 5 participating surf clubs and it has been awesome to see all those orange giant inflatable Havaianas thong in the ocean despite of the strong wind. The Havaianas challenge broke the world record with 2099 orange thong in the water!!!

After this Brad and I went to Fremantle for a walk...just because we love Freo!!!

In the afternoon we spent the day in Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour waiting for the fireworks.

Great show from 8pm that last 20 or more minutes...Just amazing watching the fireworks from a boat seeig the lights reflecting on the ocean.

What I really liked is the spirit of the day, the fact that people from all over the world were proud of being part of this big country.   

Da quando ho incontrato Brad , anche se non ci trovavamo in Italia, abbiamo sempre cercato di festeggiare l'Australia day ovuque fossimo...Quest'anno e' il mio primo vero Australia Day su suolo australiano!

Per i miei amici lontani vorrei spiegare velocemente cosa realmente significa questa festa per questo paese. Il 26 gennaio del 1788 il capitano Arthur Phillip prese formale posseso delle colonie vicino Sydney isssando la bandiera inglese. Possiamo dunque considerare questa giornata una sorta di festa della fondazione e dal 1994 tutti gli stati e i territori festeggiano insieme questa giornata dando il benvenuto a immigrati diventati nuovi cittatidini australiani e riconoscendo il valore di qualche persona per i servizi prestati.

Le celebrazioni sono iniziate presto, soprattutto con degli eventi sulla costa. Io sono andata a Cottesloe beach, una delle spiagge piu' famose e belle di Perth. 

A Cott si e' tenuta una sfida con delle gigantesche infradito havaianas arancioni, il tutto per raccogliere dei fondi per i 5 surf club partecipanti. Nonostante il forte vento la spiaggia a superato il record mondiale vincendo con 2099 partecipanti in acqua.

Dopo di questo siamo andati a fare una passeggiata a Fremantle...solo perche' amiamo Freo!

Il pomeriggio lo abbiamo trascorso a Fremantle Fishing Harbour aspettando i fuochi d'artificio. Uno spettacolo meraviglioso durato piu' di 20 minuti e che abbiamo visto dalla barca...una emozione vedere l'oceano illuminato dai fuochi.

Cio' che veramente mi e' piaciuto e' il fatto che persone provenienti da tutto  il mondo erano ugualmente orgogliose di essere parte di questo grande paese.

Shabby chic and the Art of recycling

Today I'm going to start a new project. .. I bought this coffee table for 10 dollars and now I'm going to make it useful again.  Let's start this new challenge!
What I need is sandpaper to smooth the surface, white primer, a candle, paintings in 2 different colours and a final varnish to seal.

Fashion and the city (Perth)

I probably sound redundant but my cultural backgroud only makes me think about fashion as something elegant, a little bit sophisticated and very feminine (talking about women's fashion!).

I am in Perth since the 1st of December and I have seen some kind of clothes that are not fashionable at all. I would like to start from the very bottom...Shoes (my "not so secret" passion!)...The "must have" of this summer seems to be a sort of, especially seen in white,  sandal with short and big square heel (you just should  ban that!) or a chunky wedge ...A photo can explain better what I'm talking about...

Sorry but even the red nail polish on your toes can't make these shoes sexy and feminine!!!

Short high waist pants  are also very popular and, to be honest I'm not completely against them but your body has to be in a perfect shape to wear them...otherwise don't do it, please!

Walking around the city you can also see lots of fluo clothes (tops, pants, dresses...), I know it's summer and the sun makes our souls brighter but, I'm probably old school, I still prefer a little black number!

Anyway this is only my modest point of view not a bible at all!

My honesty makes me say that I've also seen many really nice dresses, the only (big?) problem is they are very expensive. In Italy it's much easier to find good quality clothes for an affordable price. Could it be a sort of suggestion to think about?

Documentary - day 1

Definitely not bad being a "wag"! Today, early in the morning, we went to Rottnest Island with a tv crew that is making a documentary about Brad. I think I'm not allowed to reveal any other detail (lol!)...It was freezing but fun!
I took advantage of the situation to shot some backstage photos...
We left from Hillarys Harbour and the light from the city was just amazing, the sky was golden and the water blue/grey...just a vision!
The ocean wasn't too bad (coming back was a little bit rougher...let's say little bit for the Australians a lot for me!!!). Rottnest was very very windy but it's winter!!!
The ferry crew was friendly and let us visit and film the wheelhouse...they also tried to scare me talking about big waves.
I looked around chasing for whales but it's not the season yet, I have to go back in September.
Anyway the morning was really good and it worth the early start of the day!!!

Weekend in Perth (italian and english version!)

Venerdì e la città si prepara al weekend! Alcuni termineranno il lavoro anche prima e, se l'ufficio e' in citta', si concederanno qualche bicchiere di vino con i colleghi o amici che si trovano in zona.
Molto popolari attualmente sono il "Grand Central Park" (150B St Georges Terrace), "Print Hall"  (125 St Georges Terrace) e "The Stables Bar" (888 Hay Street). I primi due sono eleganti, raffinati e moderni, offrono un ambiente frizzante e la fascia d'eta' della clientela varia molto ma la media si aggira tra i 30 e i 40 anni. The Stables e' invece meno moderno ed internazionale a livello di designer ma pur sempre piacevole per una serata tra amici e un po' modaiola.
Il mio preferito, spostandoci un po' dal centro citta', rimane pur sempre Mrs Brown in North Fremantle (241 Queen Victoria St). Meno modaiolo, accoglie una clientela un po' piu' alternativa, con un ambiente che si discosta dagli altri, offrendo un'atmosfera piu' famigliare con divani e due caminetti (di cui uno esterno). Ci sono anche giochi da tavola da poter utilizzare con gli amici.

Se poi, prima o dopo aver bevuto qualche drink, si vuole mangiare qualche cosa, il mio consiglio (da italiana DOC) e' il "Millioncino" (451 Murray St) dove poter gustare autentico cibo italiano e pizze che nulla hanno da invidiare alle compatriote d'oltreoceano.
Per chi invece desidera sapori un po' piu' etnici consiglio il ristorante tailandese a Northbridge "Dusit Thai" (249 James Street), i sapori sono eccezionali e autentici in un ambiente estremamente accogliente.

Mi auguro che questi semplici suggerimenti siano d'aiuto a chi e' in visita a Perth o a chi, stia decidendo o ha gia' deciso, di trasferirsi qui.
Il mio inverno in citta' sara'  l'argomento di altri post a seguire!!!

Vista della citta' di Perth

Friday and the city gets alive for the weekend! If you work in the CBD you can't miss a drink or two in the most trend places of Perth, "Grand Central Park" (150B St Georges Terrace), "Print Hall" (125 St Georges Terrace) and "The Stables" (888 Hay Street). The first two are elegant and modern, for a quick drink after work or a nice evening among friends. "The Stables" is less modern, talking about designer, but it is still a place where you can spend a lovely night in a trend atmosphere.

Anyway my favourite one is "Mrs Brown" in North Fremantle (241 Queen Victoria St). This place is more "alternative", there is more character, it is cozier, with its sofas and two fireplaces (one is outside). You can spend hours talking with friends or playing some board game.

Before or after,  you can enjoy some food at "Il Millioncino" (451 Murray Street), real italian dishes and a great pizza! If you love ethnic food you can try Dusit Thai in Northbridge (249 James Street).

These are my little tips for a pleasant weekend in Perth, if you have any other suggestions please share them with me!!!

Winter in Perth 2013

Dopo circa un mese di permanenza a Perth mi sto quasi abituando ai ritmi di questa citta'.
Sveglia presto (e per me questo e' ancora difficile da accettare!) e poi qualche attivita' fisica oppure direttamente a lavorare. Alle 5pm pero' la citta' e' piu' o meno deserta, almeno dal lunedi' al mercoledi'. Il piu' delle volte si cena molto presto e si va a letto molto presto, ma d'altronde se la tua giornata e' iniziata alle 5 di mattina il tutto sembra acquisire un certa normalita'!!! Naturalmente i miei ritmi sono ancora legati alla tradizione italiana e, per questo, a volte mi capita di entrare in un locale alle 9pm con il desiderio di mangiare una cosa ma devo accettare la risposta "mi dispiace ma la cucina e' gia' chiusa"...Inutile ripetersi che e' venerdi' sera, che il weekend e' appena cominciato...il fatto rimane quello...la cucina e' gia' chiusa!
Questa settimana ho vissuto in centro Perth, un'esperienza nuova per me, che ho pero' veramente gradito. Quando 8 anni fa circa sono venuta qui per la prima volta mi continuavo a ripetere che questo posto era piu' un grande paese che una vera e propria citta'. Oggi, pur non essendo ancora Sydney, Roma o Hong Kong, posso ammettere che Perth e' cresciuta e continua a crescere offrendo finalmente un ambiente piacevole ed iniziando a creare quella atmosfera da grande metropoli che fino a poco tempo fa le mancava. Certo ancora c'e' molta strada da fare ma il boom economico che caratterizza l'ovest Australia sta, in un certo senso, permettendo alla citta' una crescita esponenziale.
Molti eventi famosi arrivano qui, infatti la scorsa settimana sono stata al concerto di Pink "The truth about love Tour", uno show strepitoso che consiglio vivamente di vedere. Sabato scorso ho invece visitato la mostra "Van Gogh, Dali and beyond" direttamente dal MOMA di New York. Molto interessante la parte dedicata alle creazioni contemporanee, di Van Gogh e Dali' c'erano solo un paio di opere.

My life Downunder

Da una settimana di nuovo nel "Bel Paese" e gia' mi manca l'Australia...sara' sempre cosi'...quando sono qui vorrei essere li e quando sono li vorrei la mia Italia! E' ormai la storia della mia vita!

I miei quasi due mesi downunder sono stati interessanti e soprattutto rilassanti, lontano dai ritmi frenetici di questa nostra vita.
In Australia si lavora molto ma allo stesso tempo si e' gratificati con ottimi stipendi e una qualita' della vita altissima...qui da noi si lavora solo!
Le possibilita' di impiego sono ovunque, diciamo che se vivi in Australia e non lavori significa solo che hai poca fantasia di farlo!

Le prime due settimane a Perth ho fatto la turista, anche se bene o male la citta' mi e' ormai molto famigliare, ho girato per le vie del centro, ho gustato l'atmosfera leggermente retro' di Fremantle e mi sono concessa lo spettacolo di romantici tramonti sull'oceno. A seguire mi sono dedicata alla lettura e alla fotografia, quelle cose che a causa della nostra normalita' avevo dovuto lasciare indietro perdendo un po' del mio stesso essere...mi sono insomma riappropriata di me stessa e di cio' che veramente amo fare.

Una delle mie esperienze piu' belle e' stata la visita al Roelands Village, nei pressi di Bunbury. Per spiegare di cosa si tratta bisogna tornare indietro di quasi cento anni e ripercorrere un po' le tappe di quella che in Australia viene chiamata "the stolen generation".
La generatione rubata indica i bambini aborigeni strappati alle proprie famiglie da agenzie governative australiane e da missioni cattoliche, in un periodo compreso tra il 1869 e il 1970. Il motivo dato era "educare" chi veniva considerato selvaggio, offrirgli una via di riscatto...A volte pero' dietro tutto cio' c'era anche la volonta' di nascondere bimbi nati da unioni tra donne indigene e bianchi, bambini visti come infamia per gli occidentali e preferibilmente nascosti in qualche remota missione!
Roelands e' uno di questi posti dove i bimbi venivano fatti crescere, studiare e lavorare la terra...Roelands e' ancora li e il villaggio e' ora utilizzato per un programma, chiamato RESPECT, che si occupa di formare adolescenti indigeni, con un vissuto non sempre facile, attraverso incontri con persone che li possano motivare o offrendo loro argomenti educativi.
Ho trascorso due giornate all'interno del villaggio, i ragazzi sono fantastici e gli elders (gli anziani) mi hanno trasmesso un senso di profonda pace. Un giorno, durante un forte acquazzone, una signora del posto mi dice che la pioggia e' meravigliosa e il rumore che fa sbattendo sui tetti sembra quasi una musica...Noi abbiamo perso questo stretto contatto con la natura, non vediamo piu' la meraviglia di un temporale ma ne cogliamo solo la negativita'...

La prima giornata al villaggio mio marito ha raccontato il suo incidente e dato ai ragazzi dei motivi per andare avanti anche in momenti di forte difficolta', raccontando i suoi successi sportivi ha voluto motivare i ragazzi, li ha voluti spingere a non arrendersi e incoraggiarli a raggiungere i risultati attraverso la tenacia e le proprie aspettative.
La seconda giornata ho fatto le foto durante l'intervento dello chef Mark Olive, o Black Olive (http://www.blackolive.net.au/). Mark fonde la tradizione aborigena e quella occidentale nelle sue creazioni culinarie, utilizzando erbe native, carne di canguro o coccodrillo crea uno stile culinario contemporaneo e innovativo.
