“First Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster munitions”

Vientiane – Laos 9-12 Novembre 2010-11-09

Si sta svolgendo in questi giorni in Laos il primo incontro sugli effetti delle bombe e mine antiuomo. Più di 100 i paesi presenti con oltre 800 partecipanti, tra cui sopravvissuti, organizzazioni internazionali, agenzie ONU, società civili. Il tutto al fine di dimostrare la solidarietà tra gli stati nel mondo, con l’impegno di risolvere il problema e tentando di offrire degli esempi di coraggio alle vittime e la forza di continuare a vivere senza paura.
Il Laos è un paese che si presta, purtroppo molto bene, allo scopo di tale convention, in 30 anni infatti, 50 mila civili sono stati vittime di mine ed oggi più di 300 persone ogni anno vengono mutilate o uccise dai ciò che rimane dei bombardamenti della guerra in Indocina. In questo contesto Brad Ness, giocatore della Lottomatica Elecom e capitano della nazionale australiana di basket in carrozzina, è stato invitato per dimostrare l’importanza della pratica sportiva e per motivare quanti, giovani e meno giovani, hanno perso un arto o gli arti per via delle bombe. “E’ tutto molto triste ma estremamente emozionante” – queste le prime parole di Brad a poche ore dall’arrivo a Vientiane e dopo aver incontrato dei ragazzi, sopravvissuti alle bombe, provenienti dalla Giordania, dall’Iraq e dalla Serbia, qualcuno di loro ha provato la carrozzina da gioco di Brad non avendo mai visto nulla di simile.
Gli incontri proseguiranno fino al 12 novembre, con la partecipazione di alte autorità politiche e delle Nazioni Unite e di manifestazioni/clinic di basket nei centri di riabilitazione.




The Lao PDR has been entrusted to host the First Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (1MSP), which will be held in Vientiane, Lao PDR from 9-12 November 2010. The meeting will determine how the Convention on Cluster Munitions be effectively implemented. It is expected to attract hundreds of participants from states parties, signatories, states not parties to the convention, UN agencies, international organizations, civil society, and cluster munitions survivors. This will demonstrate once again the solidarity among states across the world to strengthen our resolve towards the objectives of the Convention. The Meeting will aim to chart a vision and measures that will translate the treaty into action with a view to liberating humanity from the fear and misery of cluster munitions.
As an affected country by cluster munitions, Laos is an excellent venue to tell the reason why such a convention on cluster munitions is so important for humanity. More than three decades now, the remnant and legacy of cluster bombs remain visible and devastating ever since. Fifty thousand civilians felt victims of cluster munitions during this period of time and today about three hundred more are either injured or killed every year as a result of extensive use of cluster munitions and heavy bombardment during the Indochina war. Brad Ness, from Lottomatica Elecom and captain of the Australian National wheelchair basketball team, has been invited to the meeting in order to motivate survivors through the practice of sport.
